5 Nonfiction Books to Keep It Real
We talk about fiction a lot here on NOVL, because fiction is fun and can be an escape from the real world. But, there’s nothing like a good non-fiction book to really ground yourself and learn more about a topic or a person. Here are five of our favorite non-fiction titles:
We Are Displaced
By Malala Yousafzai
Part memoir, part communal storytelling, We Are Displaced is Malala’s own story of displacement and the personal stories of incredible girls Malala has met during her travels as an international activist. This book introduces just a few of the people behind the statistics and news stories we read about the displaced people worldwide and is an important reminder that every one of the 68.5 million currently displaced is a person with hopes and dreams.
Fierce
By Aly Raisman
This inspiring story of dedication and perseverance on the path to gold medal success in two Olympic Games is the memoir of Aly Raisman, US Gymnastics Team Captain. This heartfelt, frank, and funny journey is enhanced with never-before-published photos, excerpts from Aly’s personal journals, and hard-won advice for readers striving to make their own dreams come true.
Ryan Higa is best known as one of the top creators on YouTube, but what you don’t see on the channel is the struggle behind the comedy. Follow Ryan Higa as he takes you through his story, from depression and anger and back out again in his irreverent yet heart-felt memoir. He will also teach you how to write good well. What happens when a guy realizes that, at twenty-five, he’s never had a girlfriend? Well, if the guy in question is Paralympic ski racer Josh Sundquist, he tracks down each of the girls he tried to date since middle-school and asks them what went wrong. Unusual, relatable, and laugh-out-loud funny, We Should Hang Out Sometime is a memoir and semi-scientific investigation into looking for love, or at least a girlfriend, in all the wrong places. Alex Bertie has been making YouTube videos on gender and sexuality since he was fourteen. His debut memoir follows his life, struggles, and victories as a transgender teen. As Alex recounts his experience with transition, he provides in-depth advice for those in transition, acting as a guide and a demystifying resource.
