Choose a Manga, Get a Book Rec By Savannah Kennelly Choose a Manga, Get a Book RecI’m a big fan of manga! I’ve pretty much always been since I started reading manga at twelve. There’s just something about that black-and-white visual storytelling that really speaks to me. So if you’re like me and you love manga almost as much as you love books, this quiz is for you! Choose a manga, and we’ll give you your next read!Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. AndrewsOn the surface Demon Slayer and Daughter of Sparta don’t look like they have too much in common. But on closer inspection, they’re both historical fantasies that follow teens who are thrust into dangerous situations in order to save a beloved sibling. They also feature loveable casts, dark revelations, and edge-of-your-seat action sequences! If you love following Tanjiro’s efforts to save his sister and defeat the demons that terrorize Japan, you’ll love following Daphne’s adventures as she is forced to help save the gods alongside the infuriating (and incredibly attractive) Apollo.Lockwood & Co. by Jonathan StroudA group of teenagers fighting off otherworldly entities – check. A main character with unique powers that could turn the tide of the fight against said entities at the risk of driving themselves insane – check. Action at every turn and corruption at the highest levels – check! Any one of those traits could describe Jujutsu Kaisen or Lockwood and Co. which is part of what makes them such a good pairing! If you love watching Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara fight off curses, you’re gonna love watching Lucy, Lockwood, and George defend London against spirits and visitors! Add in a dash of from-the-top corruption to be uncovered, and you’ve got yourself the perfect series to tide you over while you wait for the next volume of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga (or the next season of the anime!)The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya MunizWell, first and foremostly, if you chose Ouran High School Host Club you chose correct! Congratulations on having excellent taste! Secondly, I can’t think of a better pairing for this manga than The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich! Fully of cheesy romance (and puns), delightful floral backgrounds, the comparisons between these two comics just don’t stop! Plus there’s a Shakespearian case of mistaken identity and spot-on comedy that will have you laughing out loud! But don’t get it twisted, this book also made me mist up as our would-be lovers face their greatest challenge. But just like all the best romance mangas – this one has an ending that will leave you squealing! Twilight by Stephenie MeyerBefore you ask, no I did not just pair the Twilight saga and Vampire Knight because it’s got vampire in the title (though the vampire part does help). But the real draw here is the ethereal romance and the will they/won’t they love triangle. The childhood friend who has a deep-seated distrust of vampires, the vampire himself who is as alluring as he is mysterious, and the human girl caught between them. I mean… come on! And while Vampire Knight has some… interesting plot twists that are thankfully not replicated in Twilight, the two share a gothic melodrama that is intoxicating and aesthetic. The Next New Syrian Girl by Ream ShukairyBetween the rock-and-roll lifestyles and tabloid rumors, NANA is a story of friendship between two girls through thick and thin. And though these two girls who share a name are very different, their bond helps them through some of their deepest heartaches. Well if you’re looking for a books with similar vibes but a less heart-breaking ending (or perhaps heart-breaking for different reasons), look no further than The Next New Syrian Girl. Khadija and Leene look on the surface as though they have very little in common, but life-changing discoveries pull these two girls together and they form a friendship despite their differences. Combine that with theme of fraught family dynamics, nostalgia, and devotion, and you’ve got a tear-jerker a-la NANA – only more boxing!Super Adjacent by Crystal CestariDo you happen to like superheroes? Me thinks you may like superheroes if My Hero Academia is your fave from this list of manga. Well Super Adjacent is the book for you! Like My Hero Academia, Super Adjacent imagines a world where superheroes are well known and well respected, run by agencies to help manage the day-to-day of superhero life. We follow two non-heros – Claire who is starry-eyed as she lands an internship working for a super agency and Bridgette who is so over the whole superhero thing and done with her famous superhero ex-boyfriend. Will these two have what it takes to save the day when all the superheroes go missing?Fence by Sarah Rees BrennanOne of the misconceptions of sports manga and anime is that you have to enjoy the sport to get into the story. NOT CORRECT. Did I know even the first thing about men’s volleyball before reading Haikyuu? No. Not a thing. Did that stop me from falling in love with each of the characters? NO IT DID NOT. Because at the core of every great sports manga is a great cast you can’t help but root for. Now take that same energy, and transport it into an elite boys’ school fencing team and add a dash of romance, and you’ve got yourself Fence! If you thought Haikyuu could use 100% more kissing, Fence is the book for you!Maybe We’re Electric by Val EmmichIf you’ve read A Silent Voice, then you know what a heart-breaking, tear-jerking story it is covering heavy themes of bullying, guilt, and self-hatred. If you’re looking for more of the cathartic drama, check out Maybe We’re Electric! When two teens from opposite ends of the school social hierarchy are stranded together in a snowstorm, they’re forced to shed their public personas and try to reinvent themselves. But shameful secrets and difficult truths may threaten to destroy everything they’ve rebuilt.Choose a Manga
